Law Society of Knoxville Offers Free Virtual Legal Clinic for Debt Relief
KNOXVILLE, Tennessee (WVLT) – The Knoxville Bar Association has announced the creation of a free virtual debt relief clinic.
The clinic will take place on Saturday June 12 from 9:00 a.m. by Zoom. The clinic will be accessible to qualified individuals who live in eastern Tennessee.
Qualification for free services will be income-based, with pre-screening by Legal Aid of East Tennessee. Clients of the clinic may also be eligible for free bankruptcy services.
The deadline to apply for income screening is June 4.
People who live in Blount, Knox, Loudon or Sevier counties can contact LAET at (865) 637-0484 to register for the clinic.
Residents of Carter, Cocke, Grainger, Greene, Hamblen, Hancock, Hawkins, Jefferson, Johnson, Sullivan, Unicoi or Washington counties can call (423) 928-8311.
Residents of Bledsoe, Bradley, Hamilton, Marion, McMinn, Meigs, Monroe, Polk, Rhea or Sequatchie can register by calling (423) 402-4766.
Once a person has been screened and found eligible for the clinic, they will be required to complete a short questionnaire outlining the facts relevant to the question or problem.
Each qualified participant who completes the questionnaire will receive Zoom’s contact information and will be matched with a volunteer lawyer.
The clinic will begin with an introduction by Judge Bauknight to explain the purpose of the clinic and the basics of Chapter 7 bankruptcy, including the pros and cons of filing for bankruptcy. Following Judge Bauknight’s brief presentation, clinic clients and volunteer lawyers will be matched in confidential Zoom study rooms for one-on-one consultations.
